오늘의 영자신문 읽기 입니다. 아침 미국에서 세간을 떠들썩 하게 만든 인종차별 사건이 하나 발생했어요. 영자신문 읽기로 한 번 읽어 보시죠!

 

ABC News 속 앵커와 기자의 대보도 내용을 영자신문 읽기로 풀어보았습니다. 어느 백인 여성이 '반려견에게 목줄을 채우세요' 라고 타이른 흑인 남성에 과민 반응을 보이며 경찰에 위협을 받았다 신고를 한 사건인데요. 

 

이 사건은 빠르게 트위터를 통해 영상이 공개 되며 백인 여성이 엄청난 비난을 받고 회사에서도 자리에서 물러나게 되었다고 합니다. 

 

We're going to turn now to that confrontation those cut on camera sparking outrage over night.

이어서 지난 밤 (많은 이들로 하여금)분노를 일으켰던 카메라에 포착된 싸움에 대해 보시죠. 

 

A white woman calling police after a black man says he asked her to leash her dog in central park. 

TJ Homes joins us with what they're both saying this morning. Good morning, TJ.

한 백인 여성이 한 흑인 남성에게서 그녀의 반려견에게 목줄을 착용해 달라는 요구를 받자 경찰에 전화를 걸었습니다. 

오늘 아침, 이 두 사람이 각자 무슨얘기를 하는 지 TJ Homes 리포터를 통해 들어보시죠. 

 

 

'There's an African American man threatening my life.' Robin, those were the exact words that the woman used in a frantic manner on 911. And so much of the outrages is there this morning has to do with what many people perceived as her attempt to threaten and weaponize the police against the black man. 

여기 아프리칸-아메리칸 남성 한 분이 제 목숨을 위협하고 있어요. 바로 이 문장이 백인 여성이 마치 극박한 상황에 놓인 것과 같은 목소리로 911에 전화를 걸며 내뱉은 말입니다.  지난 밤 다수의 사람들에게서 보여진 분노는 경찰을 무기삼아 백인 남성을 협박하려 했던 이 백인 여성의 의도와 상당부분 관련이 있습니다.  

This on camera confrontation making headlines over night. You're hearing the voice of 57-year-old, Chris Cooper who says his request for this woman to keep her dog on a leash quickly escalated. 

바로 이 영상속 대치상황이 지난 밤 수 많은 기사의 헤드라인을 장식했습니다. 여러분은 지금 한 백인 여성에게 그녀의 반려견에 목줄을 착용해 달라고 간곡히 얘기했다가 상황이 급격히 커진(악화됨) 57세 크리스쿠퍼 씨의 목소리를 듣고 있습니다. 

 

Once she's on the phone with 911, you can hear her tone changed. 

Cooper said he was bird-watching in Central Park, just after 8am on Monday when he came across the woman with her dog unleashed against park rule. 

911에 전화를 걸자 마자 달라진 그녀의 톤을 느끼실 수 있으실 겁니다. 쿠퍼씨는 이날 오전 8시경 이 백인여성과 공원의 규정에 위배되게도 목줄을 차지 않은 그녀의 반려견을 마주쳤을 때 센트럴파크에서 새를 관찰중에 있었다고 합니다. 

 

I said to the young woman, 'Dogs in the ramble have to be on the leash all the times'. Cooper claims she refused that's when he says he use treats to try to lure the dog away from some plant beds just before when he began recording. 

저는 그녀에게 '개들은 이 공원에서 산책할 때 항상 목줄을 착용해야 해요' 라고 말했습니다. 쿠퍼씨에 이르면 그가 먹이를 이용해 그녀의 반려견이 해충들로 부터 떨어지게 하고 있을 때 그녀가 이를 거부했고 바로 쿠퍼씨는 카메라에 그 모습을 담기 시작했다고 합니다. 

 

They dont like it when you feed their dog treats, and she didnt like that at all and she immidiately grabbed the dog as you can see from the video, and started hauling it around by its collar. 

보통 반려인들은 모르는 사람이 그들의 반려견에게 먹이를 주면 싫어합니다. 그녀도 똑같이 이를 싫어 하는듯했고 비디오에서 보시는 것처럼 그녀는 개를 바로 잡아채서 목덜미에 있는 목걸이를 끌기 시작했죠. 

 

The NY police has confirmed officers did responded to a reported assault but said there were no arrest or summons issued for what they described as a "verbal dispute". 

뉴욕 경찰서는 이후 경찰들이 신고된 폭행에 대해 응답했지만 체포나 영장이 발부된 일은 없고 다만 이 경찰들에 의하면 언어폭행이 있었다고 보인다 라고 했습니다. 

 

Speaking to a lovcal NY station, the woman in the video apologized to Cooper saying,

"It was unacceptable and I humbly and fully apologize to everyone who's seen that vidio, everyone that's been offended...everyone who thinks of me in a lower light. And I understand why they do."

Adding that she was fearfull because she says before the video began Cooper had been yelling at and offering her dog unkown items.

뉴욕 경찰에 따르면, 비디오속 백인 여성은 쿠퍼씨에게 다음과 같이 사과를 했다고 말했습니다. 

" 제 행동은 납득할 수 없는 것이었으며 이 영상을 보시고 기분이 상하셨거나 혹은 제가 상식밖이라 생각하시는 모든 분들께 저는 이 점을 이해하고 있으며, 겸허히 그리고 진심으로 사죄드린다는 말씀을 드리고 싶습니다." 

 

The video quickly taking over Twitter's tranding topics with more than a 135,000+ tweets many calling for the woman to be fired and overnight her employer announced on twitter that she will be placed on administrative leave pending investigation adding, "We take this matter very seriously, and we do not condone racism of any kind."

이 비디오는 빠른 속도로 퍼져 트위터의 화제토픽에 올랐고 13만 5천명 이상의 사람들이 그녀의 회사는 그녀를 해고해야 한다는 성명에 지지를 표했습니다. 이어 지난 밤  그녀 회사 고용주는 트위터를 통해 정직 조취를 받은 상황이며 직위또한 보류했다고 전했으며 "우리는 본 사건을 매우 심각하게 여기고 있으며, 어떤 종류의 인종차별도 참지 않을 것이다." 라고 덧붙였습니다. 

 

And the dog in that video, the woman has now returned to the rescue where she got it as a lot of people pointed out her treatment of the dog in that video and the rescue said he's now in their posession and in good health. 

After incidents in the past we have seen hashtags #driving while black, #walking while black, #sleeping while black, well yes, #bird watching while black is now a topic being talked about on twitter. 

또한 비디오속 반려견에 대한 이 백인 여성의 태도가 많은 이들에게 지적을 받으며 현재 그녀는 그녀의 반려견을 다시 보호 시설로 되돌려 보냈고, 이 시설에서는 현재 강아지는 건강하고 안정된 상태이다 라고 전했습니다. 

지난 많은 사건들을 겪으며 우리는 그간 '흑인은 운전도 하지 말아야하나', '흑인은 산책도 하면 안돼', '흑인은 잠도 편히 못자지' 등의 많은 헤시태그들을 보아왔습니다. 이제 트위터에 한 문장이 더 추가되었네요, '흑인은 새관찰도 맘편히 할 수 없지'..  

 

Uhm.. yes it was, it was bandied about on twitter and it's just the reaction from people in seeing it, but she has apologized but still I think people realised the harm that it could've come from her making that call to police, T.J.

네.. 그렇죠 한동안 트위터에서 오르내린 말들이네요. 이런 사건들을 들여다 본 누릿꾼들의 반응이기도 합니다. 그녀가 사과를하긴 했지만, 그녀가 경찰에 전화했을 당시 그로 부터 어떤 상황이 초래되었을 지에 대해 많은 사람들이 인지하고 있는 듯 합니다.   

 

If he had not taken that video, would he have been arrested? Again, you have police coming to a scene, where you think something violent and assault is taking placed. and again so many of those videos we've seen in this day and age about incidents with police and black man, it's just could have been escalated in a different way, Robin. 

만약 그가 이 영상을 촬영하지 않았다면, 그는 체포되었을까? 거기에 경찰들은 무언가 폭력적이고 위협적인 상황이 일어나고있다는 신고를 받고 출동을 했을 겁니다. 요즘과 같은 때에, 우리가 접해 온 수 많은 비디오들속 경찰과 흑인들의 사건 사고들을 비추어 봤을 때, 만약 흑인 남성에게 이 비디오가 없었더라면 사건은 다른 방향으로 흐르지 않았을까 미루어 짐작해 봅니다.
